Course Information

The main purpose of this course is to review the origins and development of state and bureaucracy. In the parallelism with this purpose, this course examines the emergence of the term bureaucracy and the classical formulations devoloped by figures such as Gaetano Mosca, Robert Michels, Karl Marx, Max Weber and Ludwig von Mises. The relationships between the emergence of modern state and the development of bureaucracy will also be explored. Particular attention will be paid to different conceptualisations of bureaucracy.
